On
assignments for other stories I've often come across the followers
of traditional Christianity. I'm interested in the point where
belief and everyday life collide. I started by picturing Ethiopian
priests who became rebel fighters against a murderous regime.
This is a journey not yet complete. Along the way I met middle-class
Catholics who climbed hills barefoot seeking visions of the
Virgin Mary in Bosnia Herzegovina. Palestinian choirboys sang
"Ave Maria" at the gates of Jerusalem. The poorest
people in San Fernando flailed themselves with glass and a
few had themselves crucified. There always seems to be blood
in the background.
