I'm
usually working on at least two projects. I think projects
are essential for keeping the eye fresh. They provide the
challenge over time of creating a visual narrative. Sometimes
they are reportages back to back and sometimes they are punctuation
in a visual timeline. Projects encourage me to explore themes
in a way that's analogous to a zoom lens. There's always leeway
for the 'in your face picture' and always room to stand off
and observe. The trick is knowing which is which. Project
work, which is sometimes commissioned, is driven by my quest
for the visual surprise. Mainly the pictures are sharp, as
though they happened yesterday, but occasionally they are
out of focus, more a memory, but still in the story.
